Stocking a Healthy Pantry

Stocking a healthy pantry is easy if you know what to purchase.

By sticking to foods low in fat and sodium but high in fiber, you can make delicious, healthy meals for your family.

  • Canola oil and olive oil are two heart healthy choices. Both are rich in monosaturated fats- the kind that boost HDL (the good cholesterol) and lower LDL (the bad cholesterol).
  • Lean fish is full of omega-3 fatty acids, which help with growth, brain development and heart health. Put it on a salad or pair it with some whole grain rice to create a healthy meal.
  • Get your fiber! Known for relieving constipation, fiber has many important benefits including lowering cholesterol levels and reducing blood pressure. Fiber can also slow sugar absorption, which can help control blood sugar levels.Dried goods contain a lot of fiber and will keep you feeling full longer. Look for the dried fruits that don’t contain added sugar.
  • Beans are good for your heart. Black beans contain anthocyanins, an antioxidant compound that improves brain function. A half-cup serving provides 8g of protein and 7.5g of fiber.
  • If you’re like most Americans, you’re consuming 5,000mg of sodium per day. That’s over twice the amount the American Heart Association recommends (2,400mg or around 1tsp). Try flavoring your meals with low-sodium options like vinegar and mustard.
  • There are a variety of ways to make your food delicious without adding fat, calories and sodium. Try using herbs and spices to flavor chicken, fish or lean red meat.
  • When it comes to choosing cereals, you want a small amount of sugar with as much fiber and protein as possible. Look for cereals with less than 10g of sugar and at least 3g of fiber.
  • Buyer beware! Tomato sauces tend to be loaded with sugar. Look for sauces with 8g or less of sugar. Avoid sauces that list sugar as one of the first five ingredients.Fill your freezer with frozen fruits and veggies. These mealtime solutions are easy to microwave for a quick lunch or dinner and you don’t have to worry about spoiling.
  • Be mindful when purchasing your frozen foods! Manufacturers tend to pack frozen meals full of ‘flavor’, which translates to sky-high sodium content. Always read the label before purchasing.
  • Eat your dairy! Packed with calcium and vitamin D, foods like low fat milk, yogurt and cheese are smart choices when consumed in moderation.
  • Yogurt is a great snack choice but be mindful of the type of yogurt you select. Greek yogurt is low in sugar and packed with protein.
  • Provide healthy choices that are ready to eat. Cut up your fruits and veggies and place them in storage containers. This will make you more likely to choose these foods for snacks and meals.

Annual Fund 2011

21st Century Kids need 21st Century Skills

In this season of giving, please make a donation to Imagination Station’s Annual Fund.

Most of us don’t think twice about paying $5 for a latte or a value meal, but making a $5 donation to our annual fund goes a long way toward providing unlimited inspiration to every child that visits Imagination Station.

Imagination Station provides a critical layer of science enrichment by serving as an informal educational partner for teachers, schools and parents. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we need your support to provide hands-on science experiences for kids in our region. Your contribution will further our mission and prepare our kids to thrive in the 21st century!

At Imagination Station, our team is passionate about helping kids better understand how the world around them works. Team members are trained to work with children to develop problem-solving, inquiry-based questioning, and trial and error skills, key components in 21st century skills. This aptitude will help today’s kids craft better solutions to the pressing problems of today and the future.

With 75% of all elementary school teachers reporting that they don’t feel comfortable teaching science, often choosing not to teach science at all, there is no doubt why in a 2009 International Student Assessment, U.S. students ranked 17th out of 30 in industrialized nations in science.

On the most recent assessment, by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, only 34% of fourth-graders performed at or above the Proficient achievement level in science. Imagination Station is equipped to deliver experiences that will prepare our kids for the challenges of tomorrow.

In the last 2 years:

  • Imagination Station has provided an educational, family-friendly experience for over 450,000 visitors, over 70,000 of those in school groups.
  • We have engaged 17,000 area school children with science outreach programs.
  • Over 13,000 Lucas County children have visited the science center at no charge, through our “Lucas County Kids Get in Free” program every Saturday.
  • Over 5500 families have supported the science center with memberships.
  • We’ve hosted 5 traveling exhibitions, opened 2 new learning worlds and partnered with dozens of area organizations to bring new experiences to our community.

As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we need your support to provide hands-on science experiences for kids in our region. Your contribution will further our mission and prepare our kids to thrive in the 21st century!

PNC Mobile Learning Adventure

October 7-9th

Friday & Saturday – 10am-4pm
Sunday – Noon-5pm

The Mobile Learning Adventure  will be at Imagination Station on Friday October 7th – Sunday, October 9th.  The PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC), is helping children in Toledo, Ohio explore their career dreams while highlighting the importance of early education with the Mobile Learning Adventure, an entertaining and interactive traveling exhibit.

The hands-on exhibit offers educational games for children to do with their parents on two touch-screen kiosks. Activities include the “When I Grow Up” station, where kids dress up as different professionals and have their picture superimposed on an appropriate background. It’s one thing for your child to imagine growing up to be a firefighter. Seeing themselves as a firefighter? Way better. Ever wonder what your child wants to be when they grow up? Let them show you!

The fun’s not just for the children, though. In addition, parents can take home an activity book and a Sesame StreetTM learning kit created for PNC as part of a continuing partnership.  The kit includes a magazine for parents and caregivers, children’s activity cards and a book, along with an original Sesame Street DVD that demonstrates how to take everyday moments and turn them into learning opportunities.

Chemistry Week

November 8-12, 2011

“Chemistry—Our Health, Our Future!”

The Toledo Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) will be at Imagination Station all week to celebrate the wonder of chemistry! This year’s theme, “Chemistry – Our Health, Our Future!” will explore the positive impacts of chemistry as it relates to nutrition, hygiene and medicine. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a variety of different experiments and learn that they are surrounded by chemistry, no matter what you do or eat. Visitors will also see that chemistry can be a fun, dynamic profession.
* Denotes abbreviated menu of activities available Tuesday through Friday, October 8-11. All activities will be available on Saturday, October 12.\

Activities will include:

* Sugar Shocker – Which Pop Can Will Float?
Ever wonder how much sugar is in a can of soda? This highly visual experiment will let you ‘see’ the sugar content in the soda that you drink. You may just walk away thinking again about your choices.

* Digestion – Antacid Tablets
With the holidays just around the corner, bellyaches are sure to be a potential bi-product of every delicious meal. This activity will show you what happens when antacid tablets, like Alka-Seltzer, are taken to reduce acid buildup in the stomach.

* You Make the Color Change
What happens when you blow air out of your lungs? You emit CO2, or carbon dioxide. This activity will give you a visual interpretation of CO2 emissions. When you blow through a straw and into something that contains an universal indicator, which reacts by changing colors dependent upon the amount of acid or base present, you’ll make the colors change.

* Clean a Cut
When you get a cut, a common first aid treatment is to apply hydrogen peroxide to clean out the wound and reduce the risk of infection. In lieu of an actual wound, this activity will show you the reaction that hydrogen peroxide has on the skin by simulating its reaction on a potato. If you add the hydrogen peroxide to yeast (and a little bit of dish soap), which causes the peroxide to decompose more rapidly, you’ll get a mini version of one of Imagination Station’s favorite demonstrations – Elephant’s Toothpaste.

* Wash Your Hands – You’re Glowing!
With cold and flu season knocking on our door, this activity will help visitors (both kids and adults) learn about better hand-washing hygiene. Before washing their hands, visitors will be asked to apply a glow-in-the-dark hand lotion. After washing, visitors will place their hands beneath a UV light to see how well they did. This activity also explores the difference between ‘bacteria’ and ‘virus’.

Vitamins – Which Has More Vitamin C?
Titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative chemical analysis that is used to determine the content of a specific substance in a mixture, tablet, and so on. In Imagination Station terms, you’re going to learn how to use this test to determine how much Vitamin C is in orange juice and how much is in Tang.

Diabetes 2
One of the most common chronic conditions in the world, Diabetes, occurs when the body fails to process sugar correctly. This activity explores the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and uses an insulin model to show the conversion of glucose to fructose.

How Does a Cold Pack Work?
Ever sprain your ankle or hurt your wrist and the doctor told you to use a cold pack to help reduce swelling? This activity will show you how a cold pack goes from room temperature to frigid in a matter of seconds. There’s no switch to turn on, it’s just chemistry!

How Much Fat is in That Potato Chip?
This activity shows you a visual deconstruction of one of America’s favorite snacks – the potato chip! We’ll take regular and low-fat potato chips, add a magic liquid and make the fat appear before our eyes. We’re not just picking on the poor potato chip though, chocolate chips and sunflower seeds are getting picked on too!

Which Balloon Will Change the Most?
In this activity we’re pitting Ice vs. Dry Ice vs. Liquid Nitrogen in a 3 way competition. One hint – balloons shrink when exposed to extreme cold! See what happens!

Floating Bubbles
Because soap bubbles are very light, they will float on a gas that is only slightly more dense than the air that fills them, like carbon dioxide. When bubbles settle into a container of carbon dioxide, they’ll float. In this activity, CO2 (dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide) will remain at the bottom of an aquarium allowing the bubbles to float. It’s a great way to really examine the unseen presence of gases.

What’s pH?
When placed in a basic solution, dry ice creates carbonic acid, which as its name indicates, is acidic. When placed in a cylinder filled with water and an universal indicator, you’ll see the water change colors.

National Chemistry Week is a community-based annual event that is celebrated across the country and unites ACS local sections, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life. It is the premier event that is designed to spark excitement about science in young budding scientists by allowing them to see chemistry in action in everyday activities with common household items and to interact with professionals in many different areas of science.
