KeyBank Discovery Theater

Frequently Asked Questions

The biggest, most exciting addition in Imagination Station's history is underway - and naturally people are curious about what is yet to come for the science center. Here you will find the answers to some of our most common questions.

What will the theater look like?
The 10,000-square-foot addition will be constructed along Summit Street on the front side of Imagination Station, significantly changing the exterior of the science center. The design was chosen with careful consideration of the surrounding architecture in an effort to blend seamlessly with the historical buildings and new construction in the area.

The octagon entrance will be replaced with an entrance to both the science center and the theater, and the Summit Street pedestrian bridge will be removed to accommodate the addition. Imagination Station collaborated with surrounding organizations to discuss the bridge removal and all were in support of the decision.

The addition will include the theater, food service area, projector room and new gift shop.

What equipment will be featured in the theater?
The highlight of the 270-seat KeyBank Discovery Theater is its massive 58-foot wide screen. The projection and sound system will feature Real D3D technology around the Barco 4K digital system with a QSC 5.1 audio system, allowing for enhanced performance and outstanding on-screen experience.

This equipment accommodates 3D films, live video streaming, video game connectivity and presentation materials, allowing for a broad variety of viewing opportunities.

Will Imagination Station be open during construction?
Yes! The science center will maintain regular operating hours throughout construction, however a temporary entrance will be used for safety purposes.

Will visitors still have access to Imagination Station via the underground tunnels?
Yes. Access to Imagination Station from the Vistula Parking Garage will remain open via the underground tunnel that connects the parking structure, One SeaGate and the science center.

How is Imagination Station funding this project?
The theater is a $10M investment in the science center and is funded through a public-private partnership. The project is funded through State dollars for capital expenditures and support raised through private sources, most notably from KeyBank, the marquee donor.

Imagination Station is grateful for the support of the The Science Society, a collection of community members who support STEM education, who contributed to the fundraising for this project.

The science center is working to secure additional contributors. No levy funds will be used for this expansion.

Who is building the theater?

The Collaborative is designing the addition and Lathrop will oversee its construction. The science center is committed to working with local vendors for the design and construction whenever possible.

How long will construction take?

Construction is expected to take approximately 12 months, starting in June 2019.  The theater will open to the public in the summer of 2020.

What type of films will the science center offer?
The science center is still identifying the exact films that will be featured, but feels strongly that the theater should be a destination for people of all ages and interests. Potential film genres include educational films, documentaries and major motion pictures.

Will the theater play new release movies?
While the theater will have capability to play essentially any type of movie or presentation, the bulk of our programming will extend our mission of science education and will focus on STEM topics. However, we also plan to host community- and entertainment-focused events.

Will the theater be open in the evenings?
Yes. Theater hours will extend into the evening; however, exact showtimes will be determined closer to opening.

How much will it cost to see a film in the theater?
Our goal is to offer flexibility and affordability to make the theater as accessible as possible. While ticket prices will be determined closer to opening, there will be special pricing options including:

  • the option to purchase admission to only the theater, only Imagination Station or both.

  • discounts for Imagination Station members.

  • free admission to educational films for Lucas County kids on Saturdays with a paid adult admission (limit two kids per paid adult). This discount was made possible through a gift from KeyBank.

Can individuals or businesses rent the theater?
Yes, there will be rental options for private and corporate functions. The space is ideal for lectures, business meetings, press events, TEDx conferences and private events. Details will be available closer to opening.
